I emerged courier 0.48.1 to use as an MTA/IMAP server but it wouldn't start 
properly.  
  
I noticed one path that didn't exist /var/lib/courier/tmp so I did:   
   
   mkdir /var/lib/courier/tmp   
   hown mail:mail /var/lib/courier/tmp  
   mkdir /var/lib/courier/msgs   
   chown mail:mail /var/lib/courier/msgs    
  
technicaly /var/lib/courier/msgq is also missing but it seems that once I  
created the tmp one courier created the msgq one by itself.

Mass re-assign, seems like mail-mta/courier needs a maintainer.
