After updating from 6.6.47-hardened kernel to 6.6.51-hardened, hddtemp wasn't anymore able to access SMART data:

hddtemp /dev/sda
/dev/sda: TOSHIBA DT01ACA050 : S.M.A.R.T. not available

That happened to all 4 of my hard drives (non-sdd). I didn't see any relevant errors on any logs.

Went back to the previous 6.6.47-gentoo-dist-hardened kernel and hddtemp started working again.

Oh, but smartctl still worked on 6.6.51

Interesting! I don't see any immediate candidates in that range at a _very_ quick glance but I can look more later if nobody else does.

It may (or may not) be helpful to include a strace of hddtemp and smartctl calls on working and non-working kernels.
