Any chance we could be allowed to use the mod_alias Redirect directive on toucan? I'd like to be able to do redirects for the devmanual so that, say, http://dev.gentoo.org/~ciaranm/r/title-here would automatically go to the relevant page (I can generate a file mapping titles to URLs as part of the devmanual's build system). Doc in question: http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mod_alias.html If it's off for security / other reasons, WONTFIX is fine.
This was enabled before and abused by a few devs to redirect to personal/other sites. So, that's why we have it disabled.
This has been closed for quite some time. Could we get redirects allowed again for those of us that would like to use them and aren't going to abuse them?
@kurt, it's minor but if you're going to keep it off as policy, can you get it documented in the new dev handbook please? For those retiring, a redirect is massively useful to transfer our projects to webspace we can still access. Hindsight is 20/20, but if it's policy I'd put it in the new dev docs so folks don't get pissed off down the line.

The redirect is meaningless for retired folk because we move their homedir out of the /home location thus not being accessed anymore. If they have stuff there that should be somewhere else, they should have moved it themselves. If someone needs something from that homedir, infra can go back and grab it as we don't totally nuke the files. > Hindsight is 20/20, but if it's policy I'd put it in the new dev docs so folks > don't get pissed off down the line. If they're going offline, they should know that it won't be there after they're gone. Why would we keep their dirs available and not maintained?
Closing for now. Re-open if you want us to reconsider the policy.
