Created attachment 898487 [details] Buildlog_flac-1.4.3 Never done this before so bear with me. I'm an historian, not a developer or programmer. PORTAGE_SIGPIPE_STATUS:-141 phase-helpers.sh line 372 of build log tar version 1.35 xz-utils installed and working properly ls -la flac-1.4.3.tar.xz = -rw-rw-r-- 1 portage portage 1006728 sha1sum=a8c36ac8c6e2df8611aab9540bb9e6bdf646c0e1 I do see a note broken symlink titled files in dir: /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/flac-1.4.3 It is supposed to link to: /var/db/repos/gentoo/medi-libs/flac/files Using xz -d <file> in a practice directory does extract the archive, tar works from there, and I can install flac-1.4.3 manually but not through portage.

Thanks for the report; unfortunately there are some slight issues: the build.log seems to be perhaps the wrong file and the emerge --info seems perhaps to be truncated (missing the last few lines). The sha1sum of my file matches yours, but I am able to install successfully. Please try re-uploading the build.log and emerge --info.

I am unable to reproduce the failure. It seems to be failing on a file with an emoji in the filename. 🤔.flac I suspect that something about your system causes that failure. Maybe a specific filesystem failure? What type of filesystem does /var/tmp/portage reside on?
I am unable to reproduce the failure. It seems to be failing on a file with an emoji in the filename. 🤔.flac I suspect that something about your system causes that failure. Maybe a specific filesystem failure? What type of filesystem does /var/tmp/portage reside on? Mr. Gilbert: jfs /dev/sdb1 / jfs iocharset=utf8,noatime 0 1 /dev/sdb2 /home jfs iocharset=utf8,noatime 0 2 #/dev/sdb3 /mnt/efi fat32 noauto, noatime 0 2 /dev/sdb4 none swap sw 0 0 #/dev/pktcdvd/0 /mnt/udfwrite udf user,noauto,noatime,utf8 0 0 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0 It stands to reason this is local which I suspected, since I waited about a year before resorting to this expedient. Gentoo user since 2004-05, never before have I had to resort to this method since this site and forums have always helped me solve problems over time. I thank you all for your time and efforts. Sorry to have imposed, but you have given me an interesting clue to run down.
Please remove "iocharset=utf8" from your mount options. That seems to resolve the issue for me.
"Please remove "iocharset=utf8" from your mount options. That seems to resolve the issue for me." Your solution worked, Mr. Gilbert. Years ago I had an issue with the kernel not mounting my jfs filesystems. A thorough search of the Gentoo forums led me to a thread that proposed this iocharset remedy, which worked. Interesting how earlier versions of flac compiled without issue but not 1.4.3 This problem is resolved at long last thanks to your indefatigable efforts, Mr. Gilbert. I intend to make a donation to Gentoo developers. I have learned something through this experience, which is why I settled on Gentoo many years ago.
