Kicad supports loading .stpz .wrz , so compressing all the 3d models on install would be a HUGE space saver. Could be an option if you don't think it should be done unconditionally. Also ideally should be done live while decompression to avoid the intermediate step of having all modules uncompressed.

Thanks for the report, I'll look into this. I'm not sure on the fly compression can be done when unpacking the package due to how portage works, but at least we can start with space savings when the models are installed. I'm also think, maybe making upstream having the models compressed would be a better strategy, so I'll work with upstream and see if they are open to this.
