Description aceone 2024-07-01 20:59:35 UTC
Please add Betterbird to the Thunderbird ebuild, so that Betterbird can be build instead of Thunderbird.

Betterbird fixes bugs and adds features that were discarded by the Thunderbird developers.

I would assume a default stance that this cannot be unconditionally patched in, as then people trying to install thunderbird wouldn't get thunderbird, they would get betterbird.

It could, in theory, be added via a USE flag to apply betterbird as a patch series. However, given it has its own releases, branding, etc. I wonder why simply having a (guru?) package called "betterbird" isn't an option?

A separate package is surely better, because the alternative is:
a) bumps regularly end up losing the 'betterbird' USE flag or it gets masked (-> users lose functionality) because the patches aren't ready for a new release, or
b) bumps have to be delayed until the patches are ready (which is not good for TB users and not good for the maintainer)
