I installed the official ati-drivers according to the HOWTO on the Gentoo Wiki.
Unfortunately, after I start the X server, my mouse moves in an irregular
pattern. While moving the mouse in any direction, it moves up and down. If I use
any buttons on the mouse it moves to the left. If I hit any of the Special
Function buttons on my Dell keyboard (search, mail, and sleep) the mouse
right-clicks. This happens in any window manager including TWM, Blackbox, and KDE.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Type 'startx'
2.Move mouse
3.



Expected Results:  
The mouse should have moved where I moved it.

This problem has really, really bothered me (especially since I just decided to
completely get rid of Windows on my nice computer and install Linux.) It's
caused many hours of IRC and yet I still have not been able to solve the
problem. Any workaround, whether it be a change in my config or a hack and patch
job is welcome. I need to be able to use the official ati-drivers though as I
need 3d acceleration for Cedega.

Update:

GPM works on one computer with the mouse but not on the other (I get the same 
exact problem). I now am absolutely sure that this is either a kernel problem or 
a hardware problem.

No. I've said before, the problem does not lie with the xorg.conf. I've actually
unplugged my mouse from my KVM switch and it now works with one small problem.
Every once in awhile it freaks out and flys across the screen. Because of this
"workaround", I'm going to downgrade the Severity to Normal.

let me rephrase the question.

if you use the radeon or the vesa driver the problem disappear?

looks like a mouse hw/driver issue and is completely unrelated to the ati-drivers...

1. I can't test it with the VESA because it doesn't work on my PC. 
2. I unplugged the mouse from the KVM switch and plugged it directly into the 
computer. The mouse worked normally.
3. Whenever I'm using an 3D acceleration enabled application, the mouse 
occasionally flips out. It will jump around, shoot on it's own, and won't stop 
until I leave the mouse totally still for about 2-3 seconds.
4. The situation in number 4 happens more and more when the program is more and 
more hardware-intensive. For example, in Starcraft it rarely happens, yet in 
Unreal Tournament 2004 it arises every 30 seconds maximum (to the point where 
the game is unplayable). It also happens when more is going on in the game. For 
example, in UT2004 it doesn't happen as much when I'm walking around on my own, 
but more when I'm being shot at or when I'm near more people. This leads me to 
believe that it still is a problem with the ati-drivers.
5. I've downgraded to gentoo-sources-2.6.11-r7 and the problem still happens. 
The same kernel worked fine with the same mouse on another computer. This leads 
me to believe that it is not a kernel problem, but a problem with the ati-
drivers.

From what you say looks like an hardware issue about your particular usb/mouse
configuration.
Reopen if I'm wrong.

No, I'm sure it isn't a hardware problem. The mouse worked fine on an identical 
kernel config on another computer as well as on the same computer in Windows. 
I've discovered that the keyboard freaks out as well whenever my mouse does.

But yeah, its not a hardware problem. I've also submitted a ticket to ATI about 
10 minutes ago and wait gleefully for a reply.

Lastly, new drivers come out (according to ATI) every two months. Two months was 
yesterday so new drivers should be coming out soon. I'll try them out as soon as 
they come out to see what the problem is.

The problem was fixed. EHCI seemed to be the problem. I took it out of my kernel 
and bingo, mouse works. Of course, I no longer have USB 2.0 support...
