it is necessary for smooth functioning under amd64.  (I first emerged the 7.5
gentoo version, and it left me with a dead window after "starting editor".)  the
latest version here is advertised to fix amd64 problems, and after building and
installing it (plain vanilla), it did indeed do just this.
