After unpacking the tarball, entering chroot et all. i tried to run 
/usr/portage/scripts/bootstrap.sh it failed reproducably on the file 
missingos.c of the portage-2.0.38 package (see the URL for complete output), 
causing the installation to abort

Oops, forgot to mention it: I used the stage 1 tarball of 1.4-rc1

1.4-rc2 is available
portage, binutils and baselayout have been updated.

We're on rc3/final now and this is old.
