I have adapted an nCryer's (http://www.h1.org/~ncryer/) patch to an ebuild, which adds an extra functionality to kopete - support for alternate encodings - so, it makes possible for kopete to be able to "talk" to non-unicode clients (e.g. various ICQ clients).
