iio-sensor-proxy can be built without systemd by simply commenting out the systemd dependency in meson.build and supplying an appropriate initscript. Void Linux does this, for example. It just works as expected. It would be worth letting non-systemd users install iio-sensor-proxy from GURU rather than having to do the above manually.
