Description Prof. Jonathan King 2005-05-17 14:42:03 UTC
KDE has a nice way to change "trapped keys", by means of

kcontrol -> Regional & Accessibility -> Keyboard Shortcuts
  -> Shortcut Schemes
-> Global Shortcuts (or -> Shortcut Sequences or...)

When I left-click a line and select "None", happily KDE still
remembers the default key (shortcut) that was assigned.

I request that the shortcut still be shown, but grayed-out,
where it was on the line (currently, it disappears from the line).

REASON: For an individual shortcut, if one remembers the line,
one can find out what the shortcut was by selecting the line and
reading down in the bottom of the window.

But it is hard to *find* a shortcut, since most lines don't have
default keys, and one has to test them one-by-one. Also, the
grayed-out version makes it easy to get an overview of how
default keys are assigned to groups of related actions. And the
user can tell-at-a-glance which actions have dft shortcuts.

The graying-out is consistent with the way that KDE menus
work, including those in the Control Center.

This request is not Gentoo specific, but rather addressed at one aspect of the
KDE environment, so the right place for it is in the KDE bugzilla. Please send
a report here: http://bugs.kde.org. Thanks.

The "What is all of this?" on

http://bugs.gentoo.org/

leads to a page which says

Welcome to gentoo.org's bug reporting system. This system is used
as a database for reporting and maintaining bugs that deal with
many aspects of Gentoo Linux. For more information on Gentoo
    Linux, please visit our homepage.

Please note that bugs should be posted here first before moving
upstream. In other words, don't bother the original package
maintainers before you bother us. Our development team will move
the necessary bugs upstream if needed.
                                      ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

(emphasis added)

If you haven't already forwarded it, I prefer that you (Gentoo
Bugzilla) move the bug upstream. I'd rather report bugs in only
one place, and let the experts forward them as they judge.
Thank you.

We care for critical bugs or security issues, but we have not nearly the
ressources to forward every bug. Regarding enhancement requests it doesn't even
make sense, since we'd need to pass possible questions between the upstream
developers and you.
Comment 4 Prof. Jonathan King 2005-06-03 15:21:41 UTC
I see your point about the enhancements; I'll try to learn the
KDE bug system. Ta.
Comment 5 Prof. Jonathan King 2005-06-09 15:14:57 UTC
I forwarded the request to the KDE Bug Tracking System
