some parts of the patch could not be applied so the ebuild did not continue

I am getting exactly the same problem, with the same patch log. However, I'm
making an install from new, and not an upgrade.

I was thinking since the Changelog mentions Danny van Dyk adding the patch:

  15 May 2005; Danny van Dyk <kugelfang@gentoo.org> lam-mpi-7.1.1.ebuild:
  Marked stable on amd64.

  15 May 2005; Danny van Dyk <kugelfang@gentoo.org>
  +files/lam-mpi-7.1.1-shared-romio.patch, lam-mpi-7.1.1.ebuild:
Fixed BUG #88110. liblammpio will now be built as static and shared library.

it might be a good idea to get him involved so I took the liberty of adding him
to CC

Just remade the patch, try in an hour.
