oh, the file that emerge asks me to attach to this bugreport doesn't seem to exist...
looks like for some reason the PKG_CHECK_MODULES macro isnt calling PKG_PROG_PKG_CONFIG (although it does properly if you USE=unicode). configure.ac now calls PKG_PROG_PKG_CONFIG explicitly and is fixed in upstream svn (r332).
