The qtbase allows to be built without glib dependency (there is a configure option for that!). Such build should be allowed. Beware that glib-less Qt may create problems (google have some reports) for downstream apps (and they should depend on qtbase[glib]). The glib is used for event loop, so problems may appear in packages that need to integrate glib-dependent software with Qt. To assist in testing, there is a special env variable QT_NO_GLIB that switches to non-glib event loop even if Qt is built with USE=glib (it may help you to reproduce problems in other packages). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Apply patch 2. Build with USE=-glib 3. Success Actual Results: dev-libs/glib is pulled into the build Expected Results: dev-libs/glib is not pulled into the build Portage 3.0.61 (python 3.11.7-final-0, default/linux/amd64/17.0/x32, gcc-13, Created attachment 885988 [details, diff] proposed patch for ebuild
Note that a configure option existing doesn't mean we'll necessarily use it. > > Beware that glib-less Qt may create problems (google have some reports) for > downstream apps (and they should depend on qtbase[glib]) ... because of stuff like this. But not up to me anyway, but the Qt maintainers.
Qt4 used to have IUSE=+glib fwiw, but Qt5 dropped that (unsure if from the start, haven't dug that deep to figure out the reason). I understand it *can* make some sense for semi-embedded purist Qt systems, but I agree with Sam that if there's downsides and given how common glib:2 is (even without gtk, e.g. shared-mime-info wants it), not sure if I want to have to worry about people disabling this and leading to obscure issues. Similar reason that I dropped IUSE="jpeg png" too, and made them always enabled with USE=gui. Bit less things for revdeps to worry about for something almost everyone will have on a desktop system anyway.
Well, unless someone has new arguments to add I'll leave this WONTFIX. At most could consider adding with use.force, but well. Not convinced that it's worth the extra cruft.
