The xft2 package from fontconfig includes a file called xft.pc that specifies xft2 for pkgconfig. Compiling xft2 enabled pango (possible gtk) requires this file to be in /usr/lib/pkgconfig, but it is not. I think this file should be installed from the xfree-4.2.1 ebuild.
Oops, I found out it doesn't install xft2 at all. I'll make an ebuild to that purpose.
This ebuild overwrites Xft.h though, so maybe it should be part of xfree-4.2.1, but I first will test whether apps compile with it.
Seems like we keep getting into each others hair :P Until pango, qt, and anything else which use Xft gets to work with Xft-2.0 in thier stable tree, Xft-2.0 will have to wait. Yes, I did check it out ages ago (see the xfree-4.2.99 ebuild), but currently nothing in portage builds with Xft-2.0.
