I have a growing number of computers ( at work, at home, at friend's places, etc ) that are all losing their nautilus icons after gnome ( 2.6 to 2.8 ) upgrades. There is nothing wrong with icons in menus or on various panels. But the desktop icons ( Computer, Trash, Mounts ) and *everything* else in nautilus shows the same icons: an 'unknown' type icon. I'm attaching a screenshot to demonstrate. I started a thread: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-324427-highlight-.html and followed *all* the suggestions, but haven't been able to revive icons on any system yet. I've tried changing themes ( the icons appear correct in the theme preview ). I've tried deleting my .gnome2 and associated files. I've tried creating new accounts and logging into gnome. I've even done an 'emerge -e gnome'. If someone could help me diagnose exactly what the problem is, I would very much appreciate it. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Upgrade gnome from 2.6 top 2.8 ( emerge -u --deep gnome ) using the 'stable' profile. 2. etc-update 3. Reboot Actual Results: All icons in nautilus are dead. Expected Results: Nice icons. screamer root # emerge info Portage 2.0.51.19 (default-linux/x86/2005.0, gcc-3.3.5-20050130, glibc-2.3.4.20041102-r1, 2.6.11-gentoo-r4 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.11-gentoo-r4 i686 AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2000+ Gentoo Base System version 1.4.16 Python: dev-lang/python-2.2.3-r5,dev-lang/python-2.3.5 [2.3.5 (#1, Apr 28 2005, 11:12:06)] distcc 2.13 i686-pc-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) (default port 3632) [disabled] dev-lang/python: 2.2.3-r5, 2.3.5 sys-apps/sandbox: [Not Present] sys-devel/autoconf: 2.59-r6, 2.13 sys-devel/automake: 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.5, 1.4_p6, 1.6.3, 1.9.5 sys-devel/binutils: 2.15.92.0.2-r7 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.16 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.8.1-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-march=i686" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/config /usr/share/texmf/dvipdfm/config/ /usr/share/texmf/dvips/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/ /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/ /var/bind /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=i686" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs autoconfig ccache distlocks sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://distfiles.gentoo.org http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/athlon-xp-packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 3dnow X adns alsa avi berkdb bitmap-fonts cdr crypt cups curl eds emboss encode esd fam flac foomaticdb fortran freetds gd gif gimpprint gnome gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 hal imap imlib innodb ipv6 java jpeg junit ldap libg++ libwww mad maildir mikmod milter mmx motif mozilla mp3 mpeg mssql mysql ncurses nls odbc ogg oggvorbis opengl oss pam pdflib perl php png postgres python qt quicktime readline ruby samba sasl sdl slang speex spell sse ssl svga tcltk tcpd tetex tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts unicode vorbis xfs xine xml xml2 xmms xv zip zlib userland_GNU kernel_linux elibc_glibc" Unset: ASFLAGS, CBUILD, CTARGET, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS screamer root #
Created attachment 58538 [details] Screenshot of nautilus with 'dead' icons Here is a screenshot showing some folders, an xls file, a txt file, and maybe some other things. No matter what type of file I encounter, the icons all look like this.
a solution has been posted on the forums thread, did that work for you?
No. I've tried all the solutions posted, and none worked. However on a number of boxes ( not all ... yet ), the problem has fixed itself after regular upgrades. Unfortunately I can't tell *which* upgrades, because I've abandoned using gnome & nautilus on systems that exhibit this problem. I only found out that it was fixed when I created a new user account, which defaulted to using gnome. If you're wondering, yes I did log back into the old account and switch back to gnome and found that the icons were now working again ... so it wasn't a problem with any particular account. It was also not a permission problem as the icons weren't available as root either.
bet this has todo with mime-types and incomplete updates, anyway not reproducable and no further reports.
