Description Klaas Decanniere 2023-11-15 20:29:55 UTC
When running on AC, all is fine.

When running on battery, weird things happen
- parts of KDE don't start, e.g network manager - I can't activate or deactivate network interfaces.
- KDE start overall is slow
- certain programs don't start (or maybe they are _very_ slow?), including powertop or firefox
- shutdown hangs and doesn't actually shut down.

I have runlevels boot, default, sysinit, shutdown and nonetwork, so no separate runlevel for battery

Trying to figure out what happens
*looking for errors in /var/log/everything/current:

Errors happening from time to time both on-battery and on-AC:
Activated service 'net.hadess.PowerProfiles' failed: Launch helper exited with
 unknown return code 1

 only happening while on battery:

 [NetworkManager] <warn> [1700069300.6561] sup-iface[d769b88a2afcac55,0,wlo1]:
request-scan: could not get scan request result: Timeout was reached

 [dbus-daemon] [session uid=1000 pid=6501] Activated service 'org.kde.KSplash'
failed: Process org.kde.KSplash exited with status 1

*looking at processes with ps:
when powertop hangs (see above), ps shows the WCHAN status as "igc_re"
I haven't figured out yet what that means - google doesn't know.

*using strace for powertop - the trace when running on battery just ends somewhere halfway. I can't make more sense of it.

So:
- how can I find out what is going on
- how do I fix this?

Could this be some API or ABI change?

Things to try tomorrow when I can have some system downtime:

emerge --ask --oneshot --usepkg=n --verbose sys-devel/libtool

I will also have a go at
emerge --ask --emptytree --usepkg=n @world

The one special thing on this machine is that I don't have swap space defined.

Thanks in advance for your time and help

Klaas

The igc driver is associated with Intel's 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet controllers but I don't really know what does re stands for.

Do you actually have powerdevil installed?

 Latest version installed: 5.27.8

and it is doing things (probably while on AC, but I haven't double-checked that)
e.g. [dbus-daemon] [system] Successfully activated service 'org.kde.powerdevil.backlighthelper'

and a few more
Comment 3 Klaas Decanniere 2023-11-22 14:42:38 UTC
Here is additional things I tried.

- emerge --empty-tree didn't help. It didn't complain either.

- Tried a @world update. The nvidia-driver package complained about missing /usr/src/linux/Module.symvers . I ran genkernel --menuconfig all, checked my apci options and generated the kernel fresh, but that did not regenerate the Module.symvers file. So I did a manual make && make modules_install making sure there was no .config mixups.

- for some reason apcid wasn't started automatically anymore, so I added it to the default runlevel.

All these combined seem to help. I will try this setup for a while and see if problems are actually solved.
Comment 4 Klaas Decanniere 2023-11-25 22:03:56 UTC
Could it be the igc driver for the Intel I225-V Ethernet controller?
rmmod igc seems to help

I think until something more concrete is nailed down, it's more of a support issue for IRC/the forums/mailing lists.
