The greek fonts provided by the mplayer team, are not bundled in the ebuild. This is similar to bug 6922. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.emerge mplayer 2. 3. Actual Results: Regardless of encoding used within mplayer, greek subtitles were displayed in non-recognizable characters. Downloading http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/fonts/font-arial-iso-8859-7.tar.bz2 and installing a font set into my ~/.mplayer/fonts directory resolved the issue as a per user workaround. Expected Results: Install the greek character set as well. It is available as http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/fonts/font-arial-iso-8859-7.tar.bz2 Apologies, but bug submission was performed away from a gentoo platform.
This is sort of a bump. I can see this issue is marked as an "enhancement", for which the bug handler obviously had his reason to mark it as such. I don't know if this issue has been resolved in fresh and/or unstable ebuilds. If not, pls consider the following: 99.999% of AVIs in circulation in Greece do use some sort of subtitling (srt, sub). Additionally, mplayer is basic to AVI reproduction in Linux and there are quite a few players out there that use it as a backend (kmplayer for example, iirc). These two issues combined mean that a Greek fellow can not watch a movie in mplayer or its derivatives, unless he founds he has to install additional fonts, not an easy feat if you don't spell Linux well. Gentoo is of course a power-user distro, but that shouldn't be a reason a user has to be stressed more than he has to :) In any case, pls do consider resolving this... Like I said, I wish I knew some more to actually contribute by providing the patch myself. Unfortunately I'm still learning... Thx for your time and apologies for your time reading this...
I think is possible to use the freetype backend nowadays, so would be just a matter of configuration. Could you please read the documentation about that ( you may use just -font font.ttf, but I guess you'll like to know the options available )

However, someone else might have to search to download a fontset, or dive into documentation to check what is the correct way to use the -font directive? I don't really care about me, since I've found a working workaround... A similar bug report, to include Hebrew font support, resulted the inclusion of the respective ISO-8859-* fontset. I certainly feel like this bug should be handled in the same way, providing an mplayer/gmplayer build for Greeks that simply works out of the box (after I installed the greek fontset, the lang was automatically set without any config on mplayer from my part).
In the short future the bitmap font support will be REMOVED in favor of the freetype ttf support. Could you please try the freetype support and tell me if is working for you. If isn't I'll add the Greek bitmaps.

I'd be grateful if you could provide an example on which arguments to run mplayer with in order to play an AVI movie with subs. Additionally, should I have the freetype USE flag in my make.conf (iirc it is disabled atm). I do have truetype enabled, so just wondering...
The recent mplayer ebuild has the freetype useflag change to truetype from the man page -fontconfig (fontconfig only) Enables the usage of fontconfig managed fonts. -font <path to font.desc file> (OSD only) Search for the OSD/SUB fonts in an alternative directory (default for normal fonts: ~/.mplayer/font/font.desc, default for FreeType fonts: ~/.mplayer/sub- font.ttf). NOTE: With FreeType, this option determines the path to the text font file. With fontconfig, this option determines the fontconfig font name. -font 'Bitstream Vera Sans'

Remember to set FEATURES=nostrip too I also did the following: ln -s /usr/share/fonts/corefonts/arial.ttf ~/.mplayer/subfont.ttf since I have corefonts installed. With this in mind and having read your documentation, I tried to play back an avi with subtitles in srt format (ISO-8859-7 encoding) with the following command: mplayer -font ~/.mplayer/subfont.ttf /mnt/G/Movies/House\ of\ Flying\ Daggers/House\ of\ Flying\ Daggers\ CD1.avi Result: Unrecognizable chars produced. Tried linking other ttfs to subfont.ttf. The fonts displayed were indeed different (italic for example, depending on which ttf I linked to subfont.ttf). But in all cases unrecognizable chars remained. :(
could you please try the pre7 and fill a bug upstream (either bugzilla or ml) if the problem persists?
(In reply to comment #8) > could you please try the pre7 and fill a bug upstream (either bugzilla or ml) if > the problem persists? Hmm, problem is my system is a production one and mplayer does have a lot of dependencies, so I'd prefer to avoid installing an unstable mplayer :/ However I will attach here a subtitle sample in Greek (ISO 8859-7) format. Feel free to experiment with it and check whether this behaviour is reproducible on your platform.
Created attachment 61045 [details] Greek (ISO-8859-7) subs in .SRT format

IMPORTANT: Note > > that I am using UTF-8 and not plain ISO-8859-7 !!! > > ============================================================================ > I don't know what you want to say with that... > Apologies for the bad phrasing. The first sentence means that both the truetype and truetype fonts USE flags are included in my make.conf. The second sentence means that my system locale is set to el_GR.UTF-8 and not to el_GR (the latter is the "simple" ISO-8859-7 Greek locale). > > With this in mind and having read your documentation, I tried to play back an > > avi with subtitles in srt format (ISO-8859-7 encoding) with the following command: > > > > mplayer -font ~/.mplayer/subfont.ttf /mnt/G/Movies/House\ of\ Flying\ > > Daggers/House\ of\ Flying\ Daggers\ CD1.avi > > If the subtitles are really in ISO-8859-7 you need to add -subcp ISO-8859-7 to > the commandline, otherwise MPlayer can't know that (AVI doesn't store that kind > of information - you shouldn't have this problem if you save the subtitles in > the AVI as UTF8). Success at last! This, provided that all the following are satisfied: (1) The "-subcp ISO-8859-7" option is used (2) I have linked a ttf font to ~/.mplayer/subfont.ttf (3) The "-font ~/.mplayer/subfont.ttf" is also specified in the command line. Obviously for (1) above manual configuration will be needed. However can (2) be set systemwide to avoid user configuration? Additionally, can the link from ~/mplayer/subfont.ttf be avoided altogether?

MPlayer can use a global config file (default: /usr/local/etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf), you can add subcp=ISO... there. And unless you installed the bitmap fonts, you need to do only one out of steps (2) and (3) - you have to change the path in (3), of course You could e.g. just add font=/usr/share/fonts/truetype/freefont/FreeMono.ttf to the global config file
(In reply to comment #13) > MPlayer can use a global config file (default: > /usr/local/etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf), you can add subcp=ISO... there. > And unless you installed the bitmap fonts, you need to do only one out of steps > (2) and (3) - you have to change the path in (3), of course > You could e.g. just add > font=/usr/share/fonts/truetype/freefont/FreeMono.ttf > to the global config file Indeed, the bitmap fonts are no longer required (the ones I downloaded from the mplayer site). Adding the subcp= and font= options to /etc/mplayer.conf did the trick nicely. So this bug can probably be closed as FIXED (should _I_ close it?) Thanks to all for your feedback and information, appreciate it a lot. Keep up the good work! PS: Only one request though: would it be possible for the font= option to be appended, during mplayer installation, directly to /etc/mplayer.conf ? This way, users may need only to configure (g)mplayer with the correct codepage to be used. Just an idea anyways :)
I tend to let the configuration as stock as possible if there aren't distructive defaults. Marked as fixed for now.
