works fine for me, OS X must cause it but really i have no idea since you didnt post an error log that was helpful
My only suggestion is to manually rm -rf /var/tmp/portage/debianutils-{version} and then to upgrade portage and then try debianutils again. It works perfectly fine on Tiger here.
