Description Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-05-03 08:37:33 UTC
The vmware-linux-tools package needs to be renamed to vmware-workstation-tools, to allow for vmware-tools for ESX/GSX server, which are not the same. The init script can remain the same. Once the vmware-{gsx,esx}-tools are added, we can add a blocker each on the others.
Comment 1 Stuart Herbert (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-05-22 14:52:47 UTC
Hrm. The name would then become 'vmware-workstation-linux-tools', which is
just too much of a mouthful. I don't want to drop 'linux' from the package
name, as different vmware-tools exist upstream for other platforms.

Can you suggest a better name?

Best regards,
Stu

Not really... but having it called vmware-linux-tools really makes it sound like
it will work for anything vmware, when really it is only for
vmware-workstation... *personally* I would just name it vmware-workstation-tools
and use KEYWORDS to differentiate between different platforms, if and when
necessary.
Comment 3 Stuart Herbert (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-05-23 12:30:53 UTC
I don't like the KEYWORDing idea, sorry, as it's not really binpkg friendly.

I'll rename to 'vmware-wkst-linux-tools'.

Best regards,
Stu

What's the problem with a long name for en ebuild? It's not like you have to
type it again every other day. Maybe you'll need it 10 times in a row, but
that's all about it.

vmware-workstation-linux-tools would be perfect, IMHO...

There hasn't been much movement on this, either. This is currently blocking me
getting the other vmware-tools versions added to portage for VMWare GSX and
VMWare ESX.

Chris, if you can handle the linux-tools -> workstation-linux-tools name change. I'll get around to working on the ESX tools. And, someone else can take care of vmware-server-linux-tools. Given the gsx/esx console ebuild changes, we should also change the tools stuff now.

We have enough ways to find if it has to be installed for Linux or FreeBSD (${CHOST} and arch conditionals), so I'd rather see it become vmware-workstation-tools and work on both Gentoo Linux and Gentoo/FreeBSD...
Comment 8 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-05-08 04:17:21 UTC
I definitely would like to see that. I suggested it on comment #2 already, so if the G/FBSD team would like it, too, then I'll go ahead with the package move today.
Comment 9 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-05-08 06:15:17 UTC
The package is now vmware-workstation-tools. I'm going to be cleaning up all of the other bugs regarding the package. Diego, if you would like to merge the FreeBSD tools, that would be very cool and I wouldn't have a problem with it, at all.
