Description Maurice Butler 2005-05-02 16:06:37 UTC
Section has dropped the configuring modules section that was in /var/cvsroot/gentoo/xml/htdocs/doc/en/handbook/draft/handbook-x86.xml, v1.18
if coldplug and hotplug are not installed this is essental to have an operating system. This possibly be included as 7.e. with code listings 20 & 21 which apply to sections 7.c. & 7.d.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.
2.
3.

Thanks for submitting the bug. I've got an old 2004.2 handbook lying around here on a disc, and I'll see if I can put that in there as 7.e

Well, here's what's happening. The handbook-x86.xml itself is irrelevant. That file is nothing more than a hub, where the other pertinent sections link in. The file we're talking about here is hb-install-x86-kernel.xml. This file lists all the kernel information, such as how to install it, via manual/genkernel and installing hotplug/coldplug.

I'm assuming we're talking about the networkless 2005.0 install handbook, so the correct link to the 2005.0 handbooks is /var/cvsroot/gentoo/xml/htdocs/doc/en/handbook/2005.0/handbook-x86.xml. What happens there is the 'final' if you will, handbook that goes on gentoo.org

This will most likely go to my superiors, but I'll patch up a hb-install-kernel-x86.xml with modules.overload.d included in it. I will not include the "extra modules" to install, as they can be installed through GRP or after a network is attained.

that isn't a patch ;-)

please run "diff -Nut oldfile newfile > patchfile.patch" and attach the patchfile

Comment 6 Jonathan Smith (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-05-07 18:28:16 UTC
preliminary objections:

1. please wrap text to 80 characters/line
2. remember that <body> tags require a blank line after them (see coding styles for gentoo docs)
3, as i understand it, module autoloading is _not_ in place of cold/hot plug, but c/hplug are designed to complement module autoloading

Added Swift as CC, just so he can review the patch.

Umm, you don't have to do that. docs-team (to which Docs bugs are assigned by default) go to Sven as well.

Removed him, then. My fault.
