Description Jonas H 2005-05-02 05:51:02 UTC
I just bought a Seagate ST3200822A 200 Gb ATA/UDMA 100 drive for a new install on my computer. 4 days after installation I started getting the following problem.

When the computer boots up it almost always stalls on running hdparm on disc. When it starts (which can take up to 15 restarts) I get the following message in /var/log/messages:

hda: dma_intr: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
ide: failed opcode was: unknown

I've posted a thread on the forum: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-2370705.html#2370705

I have contacted Seagate and I've ran the Seatools Diagnostics Program which the drive passed (as well as the smartmon test). So this leaves me with a big questionmark.

Comment 1 Jonas H 2005-05-03 13:29:46 UTC
I believe the problem is resolved since the problem and log is gone the last couple of reboots. I'm not quite sure what resolved it... I did the following:

* Enabled # CONFIG_IDEDISK_MULTI_MODE on recomendation from NeddySeagoon (no change at first reboot)

* Disabled cups

* Disabled hpoj

* Disabled rdate script

* Changed RC_PARALLEL_STARTUP="yes" in /etc/conf.d/rc to no

* Recompiled the kernel from scratch
Comment 2 Jonas H 2005-05-04 09:58:46 UTC
I believe it is hpoj or cups, since removing these resolves it. Enabling them leaves me with the problem (if anyone finds themself in a similar situation).
