Hi, The recently stabilised iputils-20221126-r1 is missing rarpd. I did not see any news items or elogs indicating this moved to a different package; the service is just completely missing after an upgrade and (obviously) failed to start when I rebooted. There is no obvious alternative rarpd package available in Gentoo. As far as I know, RARP is required to netboot many (most?) Sun SPARC workstations. The netboot instructions directly linked by the Gentoo Handbook[1][2] only describe how to use rarpd from the iputils package. "Downgrading" to iputils-20211215 brings rarpd back and things work again. Yeah, it's gone as of https://github.com/iputils/iputils/commit/fba7b62bc16f36173a1820df62cf65d5b9d5b9a1. Apparently I forgot to include it at https://gitweb.gentoo.org/repo/gentoo.git/tree/net-misc/iputils/iputils-20221126-r1.ebuild#n125.
Given that there does not appear to actually exist any other RARP server implementations for Linux whatsoever, I just went ahead and ripped out the last version of rarpd from iputils into its own package: http://draconx.ca/projects/rarpd-dx/ http://draconx.ca/archive/rarpd-dx/ So now I can boot my Sun again.
It might be worth asking upstream to restore rarpd. I think they really only removed it because nobody spoke up with a request to keep it.
