Description Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2023-07-11 10:01:51 UTC
This problem is hitting me I think each time that newer QT libs are being stabilized, but I still didn't find the root cause:
!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

NOTE: Use the '--verbose-conflicts' option to display parents omitted above

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously. If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

The following packages are causing rebuilds:

  (dev-qt/qtgui-5.15.10:5/5.15.10::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) causes rebuilds for:
    (kde-frameworks/kwayland-5.106.0:5/5.106::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)
  (dev-qt/qtwayland-5.15.10:5/5.15.10::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) causes rebuilds for:
    (kde-frameworks/kwayland-5.106.0:5/5.106::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)

The following keyword changes are necessary to proceed:
 (see "package.accept_keywords" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by kde-frameworks/kguiaddons-5.106.0::gentoo
# required by kde-frameworks/kconfigwidgets-5.106.0::gentoo
# required by kde-frameworks/kiconthemes-5.106.0::gentoo
# required by kde-frameworks/qqc2-desktop-style-5.106.0::gentoo

# required by @selected
# required by @world (argument)
=dev-qt/qtgui-5.15.9-r1 ~amd64

Would you like to add these changes to your config files? [Yes/No]

If I use the switch --ignore-built-slot-operator-deps=y I only get one conflict:
Total: 235 packages (224 upgrades, 3 new, 2 in new slots, 6 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 1.154.329 KiB
Conflict: 1 block (all satisfied)

>But I cannot solve it as no sphinx version is compatible with newer docutils
That bit is just a "WARNING:" (aka it can be ignored, not an error -- will resolve itself eventually)

If you look higher, portage is requesting you to make changes -- most likely because you've package.accept_keyword'ed some bits of QT and things are ending up mismatching:

The following keyword changes are necessary to proceed:
 (see "package.accept_keywords" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by kde-frameworks/kguiaddons-5.106.0::gentoo
# required by kde-frameworks/kconfigwidgets-5.106.0::gentoo

# required by @selected
# required by @world (argument)

Comment 3 Ionen Wolkens gentoo-dev 2023-07-11 10:14:58 UTC
Rather than do what it asks, may want to look at doing config cleanups. Unsure what you have in there.

Albeit there is some qt packages that are ~arch-only (e.g. qtquicktimeline) and would need to stay if you use them.
Comment 4 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2023-07-11 13:46:17 UTC
But I don't have any "qt" or "kde" stuff in the keywords :/, I have just grepped on my /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords dir and nothing

On the other hand, if I append --autounmask=n, it works ... it seems then a problem when autounmask is enabled :/
Comment 5 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2023-07-11 15:37:36 UTC
It seems like autounmask is getting confused by the keywords on dev-qt/qtgui.

Keywords:    5.15.9:5/5.15.9: amd64 arm arm64 ppc ppc64
Keywords:    5.15.9-r1:5/5.15.9: x86 ~amd64 ~arm ~arm64 ~hppa ~loong ~ppc ~ppc64 ~riscv ~sparc

qtgui-5.15.9 should satisfy the dependency in kguiaddons-5.106.0:

>=dev-qt/qtgui-5.15.5:5

But autounmask wants qtgui-5.15.9-r1 for some unknown reason.
Comment 6 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2023-07-11 15:39:55 UTC
Anyway, my suggestion would be to disable autounmask for general updates, and only enable it when installing a new package that might require keywording changes.

There's clearly a bug here, but it's unlikely to get fixed any time soon.
Comment 7 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2023-07-12 07:41:02 UTC
It seems it is something related with the latest openssl stabilization, that makes the migration to openssl-compat to happen when needed.

I have tried to let portage to unmask the (unneeded) packages:
# required by kde-frameworks/kguiaddons-5.106.0::gentoo
# required by kde-frameworks/kconfigwidgets-5.106.0::gentoo
# required by kde-frameworks/kiconthemes-5.106.0::gentoo
# required by kde-frameworks/qqc2-desktop-style-5.106.0::gentoo
# required by x11-themes/QGnomePlatform-0.9.1-r1::gentoo[-minimal]
# required by @selected
# required by @world (argument)
=dev-qt/qtgui-5.15.9-r1 ~amd64
# required by dev-qt/qtwayland-5.15.10::gentoo
# required by kde-frameworks/kguiaddons-5.106.0::gentoo[wayland]
# required by kde-frameworks/kxmlgui-5.106.0::gentoo
# required by @__auto_slot_operator_replace_installed__ (argument)
=dev-qt/qtdeclarative-5.15.10-r1 ~amd64

After that, it has failed with the attached error related with openssl migration... but trying with a higher --backtrack has succeeded.

Then... it seems that, when --autounmask is enabled, portage ends up wanting to unmask those unrelated packages due to some issues it hits for resolving the openssl/openssl-compat splitting

error after unmasking what portage demands it to unmask

After that, rising the --backtrack, makes it resolve properly all the conflicts

error_debug.txt.xz

Running the command with --debug has pointed me that:
The following keyword changes are necessary to proceed:
 (see "package.accept_keywords" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by kde-frameworks/kguiaddons-5.106.0::gentoo

 * In order to avoid wasting time, backtracking has terminated early
 * due to the above autounmask change(s). The --autounmask-backtrack=y
 * option can be used to force further backtracking, but there is no
 * guarantee that it will produce a solution.

That would explain the issue: when autounmask is enabled, backtracking is not going further enough and tries to get the blocks resolved by unmasking some qt packages
Comment 10 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2023-07-12 09:19:00 UTC
At the end:
emerge -avuDN world --jobs=2 --autounmask=y --backtrack=10 --autounmask-backtrack=y -> didn't work (10 is the default value)

But:
emerge -avuDN world --jobs=2 --autounmask=y --backtrack=30 --autounmask-backtrack=y -> works

I am unsure about why backtrack=10 is enough when autounmask is disabled but not when it is enabled :/ I guess it starts "autounmasking" packages before the backtrack limit is reached
Comment 11 Ionen Wolkens gentoo-dev 2023-07-12 09:40:10 UTC
On that note, maybe it wouldn't hurt to raise default backtrack to 30 with the depgraph becoming ever more complex than it used to.

Being slower before failing vs failing in confusing ways and requesting users to try --backtrack=30 (or not even mentioning in this case) does not seem that great.

...not that it explains the thing with autounmask here, so guess it'd be more of a mitigation for this particular bug -- but backtrack issues are common with QT regardless.
Comment 13 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2023-07-12 11:38:06 UTC
that looks interesting but I don't know why I still need to append --autounmask-backtrack=y, otherwise it keeps failing (and not even suggesting the option, except when --debug is used). I am unsure if it's even reaching the "30" level of backtracking if I don't pass the --autounmask-backtrack=y option
