Description Pieter Van den Abeele (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-04-30 19:24:16 UTC
Hi guys,

Matt Sealey who runs the genesi store, told us there was an issue with our vendors.gentoo.org page that links to their store. Basically the way our vendors system is supposed to work is:

1. customer visits the page
2. customer sees an interesting product by a company that sends part of the profits of the product to the gentoo foundation
3. customer fills in a form with contact details
4. upstream vendor contacts customer and takes it from there

Several customers got to step 3. Once the customer has submitted his contact details, he gets a 'thank you for your order' page. At this point in time no actual order has been placed, so instead of the thank you the page should have some instructions on what will happen.

I believe Genesi (and I've cc'ed matt for this reason) wants to have a message up there that says:

"you'll get an email from the upstream vendor asking you to go to their website, fill in your billing details and by doing so complete your order."

Right now all the customers who got an email from genesi don't complete the process because they think they've placed an order with gentoo and they want to avoid placing a second order with Genesi.

Help would be appreciated. I was told bugzilla was the fastest way to get this fixed. If possible, can we get Genesi a contact address for issues like these? If the product description changes, we'll have to update our page ...

Thanks!

Pieter

Any of you infra folks have good CGI skills? We really need to find someone internally to help manage this site. From what I understand its rather simple. If so, someone step up!

My biggest qualm is with the link that says "BUY NOW". Then I think the form takes way too much information; at least for our store they would need to re-enter this to gain an account to order the machine, which is a chore for users.

It would be best if it detailed that for the ODW, it stated that it was for
getting "interest" from users, and that they would be mailed with instructions
on how to order the machine.

We also could engineer some form submission such that it creates the account
on our store, in order to expediate ordering; this would require very little
engineering on the Gentoo store part.. but remove the ability for Gentoo to
track interest on their own (Genesi store would have to relay form submissions
on account creation).

I spoke to our doc guys earlier this week about the vendors.gentoo.org issue before speaking to you infra guys, but they didn't have anybody who knew what machine vendors.g.o was running on and how to get access to the stuff running on it.

I'd like to get the ball rolling on this. If none of the infra guys know CGI/html that's ok. I speak cgi/html/guide.xsl. I wouldn't mind maintaining that page. I'm going to cc swift for his input on the http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/where.xml issue matt just mentioned. Maybe swift knows somebody in his team you guys can give access and who can help us change those two lines of html code.

Thanks to Corey Shields for fixing this. :-)
