Description Hans Kwint 2005-04-30 10:23:45 UTC
Probably, the bug is because MS stopped WebDAV / HTTPMail support, but I just need to check if more people have this problem to get that confirmed.

I'm running hotwayd v 0.8.2 + hotsmtpd + xinetd 2.3.13.
All configured well, worked with moz-thunderbird for a couple of months, but without changing anything at all, yesterday (29 april 2005) it gave the following message:

Alert
Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server 127.0.0.1 responded: Remote server said password was invalid.

In my log/debug (hotwayd -l 3):
Ghans hotway[11617]: AUTH failed, hotmail said password for user ******* invalid, host=127.0.0.1

(******* is my user name / hotmail adress)

Disabling the passwd manager from Thunderbird and trying to manually type the passwd doesn't help, however, the exact same username + passwd work fine if I use hotmail's webinterface (with Firefox).
I'm still able to log in (telnet) to hotwayd.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Emerge + configure hotwayd
2. Emerge + configure e-mail client to use hotwayd using a hotmail-adress
3. Receive your mail using the e-mail client (I used moz-thunderbird), type your passwd when asked

Actual Results:
Box pops up:

Alert
Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server 127.0.0.1 responded: Remote
server said password was invalid.

Expected Results:
Receive the hotmail e-mails as it did before 29 april

compiled + installed the package myself, because I needed hotsmtpd and portage
didn't include it at the time.
used hotwayd-0.8.2.tar.bz2 from the distfiles, ran tar -xvjf, configure, make
and make install, and moved the executables to /usr/sbin.

Sorry, we'll need to wait for upstream to provide a solution for this. If you want more users to respond, it might be a better idea to ask on gentoo forums instead.

Hi, some new info for this bug:
I recently found out MS started 'asking us to pay' for WebDAV-acces to our
hotmail accounts.
Please read
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1277989&forum_id=80217
and the note at
http://www.boolean.ca/hotpop/
for messages pointing in this direction (though my answer looked a bit
different, as described before).
There were also other people with the same problem on the sourceforge site.

My proposed resolution for this bug is:
-Upgrade to an Hotmail Plus account, $20/year + credit card needed
(I'm not going to, but it's the only solution it seems).

I reopened the bug since UPSTREAM won't (can't) resolve it, but the user has to.
I think the ebuild has to contain a sort of warning, telling the hotmail users
they need a 'hotmail plus' account for hotmail to work with hotwayd.
That way this bug could be closed 'cleanly'.
Comment 3 Andrej Kacian (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-05-31 10:27:44 UTC
I've added the warning to be displayed both before and after the emerge into
0.8.2-r2. I've also marked it stable on x86 and removed all older ebuilds.
Thanks for letting us know and feel free to chime in again if you think the
wording of the warning should be changed, or more info included, or anything of
that nature.
