Description Ulrich Müller gentoo-dev 2023-06-27 10:36:38 UTC
I see the following stray reverse DNS entries:

$ host 217.69.169.222
222.169.69.217.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer foghorn.gentoo-ev.org.
$ host 217.69.169.223
223.169.69.217.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer rsync1.de.gentoo.org.
$ host 217.69.169.224
224.169.69.217.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer foghorn.gentoo-ev.org.
$ host 217.69.169.225
225.169.69.217.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer foghorn.gentoo-ev.org.

According to the protocol of the 2007-10-31 Gentoo e.V. members' meeting:
"Foghorn" was a server (sponsored by Thomas Krenn AG) which was moved to the data center of Sectoor GmbH in January 2007. Apparently it failed with hardware problems later in the same year. I guess that this server also provided the rsync mirror service.

Whois points to Sectoor GmbH and GHOSTnet GmbH as the entities responsible for the above IP addresses. I've already contacted technik@sectoor.de (which bounced) and info@ghostnet.de, but no reply so far. I've also contacted the former CEO of Sectoor GmbH (not exposing their PII here).
