Description Fred Albrecht 2005-04-28 13:15:52 UTC
showimg 0.9.4.1 running on top of KDE 3.3.2 never manages to display the thumbnails in the thumbnail browsing pane. All other images are displayed correctly. The problem appears whatever size is used for thumbnails.

If thumbnails are toggled off, the generic icons used show the same behaviour.

I have notified the developer.

As it is showimg isn't useable.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. start showimg
2. browse a directory with images
3. urk

My system is mostly stable packages, especially on the library side.
There is a discussion on this issue and related ones at
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-300921-start-0.html where some feel that
the qt libs are at fault somehow although the bug only appears in showimg (I
tried a lot of similar applications).

Ditto. I'm running Xorg 6.8.2-r1, Qt 3.3.4-r2, and KDE 3.4.

I sent email to him which apparently went through but never got any reply.

Hey Folks,

they author of showimg, Richard Groult, actually got back to be on my email.
Bottom line was, he has no idea about the problem, since it only seems to occur
on Gentoo systems. If you'd like more detail, here's our conversation so far:

********************************************************************

Hello Richard,

since there were no follow ups to the forum post discussing this problem, I
decided to contact you directly.

When using showimg on my machines kde-3.3.2 / kde-3.4, qt-3.3.4, Gentoo Linux,
the thumbnails fail to display. The only way to get them visible is to scroll
the thumbnail bar up and down. Thereafter they fail to redraw and vanish
again, if they are touched with the mouse or covered by another window.

The forum post

        http://listes.jalix.org/wws/arc/showimg-users/2005-03/msg00005.html

also describes the issue pretty well, though I do not agree that this is a
kde/qt bug, since the problem only seems to appear in showimg, and possibly
some kpat game. I agree however, that the issue is likely qt related, since
it manifested when updating from qt-3.3.3 to qt-3.3.4.

Might it be possible that showimg has problems with certain compile flags?
That seems to be a reasonable question, since problems tend to appear mostly
on Gentoo systems.

I'd much appreciate any ideas, since - but for this awful issue - showimg is
still the most comfortable image viewer out there.

Best Regards
Nik

        No pb.

It's maybe a qt or gentoo bug because I dunno anyone else having this
pb :-/

I'm disappointed, I dunno where the pb is...

Unfortunatly, I have no idea because it seems specifics to the
gentoo... have
you more information about other softwares having this pb?

Hey Richard,

thanks for getting back to me.

This thumbnail refresh issue is somewhat hard to nail down, since Gentoo is a
meta-distribution and people do not generally have the same setup. From the
Gentoo Forums i gather that not everyone suffers from this issue. Strangely
enough no other application has this kind of issue on my machine. I only read
in the forums that "kpat" supposedly has this problem. I still have to try that
on my other machine at home ... on this one i don't have the application.

What kind of mechanism do you use to display thumbnails? It must differ
substantially from all other kde apps since none of those is broken on my
system. I just verified, that it has nothing to do with gcc flags and
optimizations, since the issue occurs even when switching to

CFLAGS="-O1 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

I attached the compilation log ... hope it is good for something though i doubt
it ...

The Gentoo Bug associated with this issue is

http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=90758

I will post our conversation there, maybe other people know something ....
More information on the issue can also be found on

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-333460.html
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-300921.html

If there is some specific information I could provide to help resolve this
problem, please let me know!

Best Regards
Nik

Can all of you having this problem confirm that it does not happen with
qt-3.3.3-r1, and it happens with qt-3.3.4?
That would be a good starting point...

It is 3.3.4-r3 that I have installed here, haven't tried it with 3.3.3-r1 (which
is ~ masked on amd64).
I tried kpat though (mentionned above as having similar problems) and it
appeared to work normally, no display problems that I could see.

I'm having the same problem with showimg. This first happened when I upgraded to qt-3.3.4-r3.
I'm willing to downgrade qt to see if the problem remains. But what things will have to be
recompiled? I'm running kde-3.3.2. Will recompiling kde-base and kde-libs be enough?

It should be enough to recompile just Qt and logout and relogin in kde.

Comment 9 Mathias Van Moortel 2005-06-13 10:02:34 UTC
I have installed qt-3.3.3-r1 and showimg works perfect.
I did have to recompile kdelibs. Showimg wasn't installed on my system, when I tried to emerge
it, i got an error that kdelibs wasn't installed. Reemerging kdelibs and than emerging showimg
worked. I hope someone can make a fix so that showimg works with more recent versions of qt.

Thanks Mathias.

Wild guess: can someone try (if he could reproduce the bug) to recompile
qt-3.3.4, but commenting out the lines in the ebuilds that apply the
"flickerfree_qiconview_buffered" patch and the
"flickerfree_qscrollview_fixwindowactivate" patch first?

Commented, and ... it works! Thumbnails and icons in the thumbnail browsing
panel or Ok.

Not need to recompile anything else.

Same here, commented and recompiled qt-3.3.4-r4. Showimg is working as it should.

Patches removed from the Qt ebuild.

I will use this bug as a reference in future when we are asked to include 3rd
party patch in our ebuilds ;)
