Description Pierre-Henri Jondot 2002-10-13 01:35:51 UTC
I saw that a few days ago some pppoe documentation was added.

Unfortunately, it is really weird and, IMHO, wrong.

The hack proposed in http://www.gentoo.org/doc/pppoe.html is quite obsolete with
gentoo 1.4_rc1 livecd because rp-pppoe IS built-in.

It would have made sense with the gentoo 1.2 isos that did not have it (but it
would have been easier then to use one of the isos I patched adding rp-pppoe...)
but it does not with the gentoo 1.4_rc1.

Moreover some points are very weird :

I read that PPP over Ethernet option must be checked : it is wrong... It won't
harm but will be totally useless... unless rp-pppoe is built with a specific
configuration option that will allow it to do kernel mode pppoe. The standard
(as with emerge) don't, and won't make use of this module.

So I do propose some updated documentation, just editing build.xml. I added
specific pppoe instructions.

Btw : changed a _ to - for my name

removed a very old mention of a gentoo 1.1 stage 3 tarball concerning kernel
sources... No kernel sources are included in stage 3 tarball.

And that is about all.

I would suggest, sorry ZhEN, to get rid of the pppoe.html you wrote.

Please find attached two files : the modified build.xml
and the diff from the current 1.72 version to this one.

No problem ;-)
I was just reading this off of the buglist, so I had no idea whether it was
wrong or not. I will remove the seperate pppoe guide and add your fixes ;-)

Thanks again,
