Downgrading to =sys-apps/xdg-desktop-portal-gnome-44.0 did not work for me. Downgrading to =sys-apps/xdg-desktop-portal-gnome-43.1 did the trick.

Hi. Thx for looking into this. I am not the owner of the ticket but I do have the same problem using 'xmonad'. Just tried '=sys-apps/xdg-desktop-portal-gnome-44.2' without any luck. Same error as before.
Problem still persists with `sys-apps/xdg-desktop-portal-gnome-45.1-r1` A "sledgehammer" workaround is using systemctl --user mask xdg-desktop-portal-gnome taken from https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/206630#issuecomment-1565046441.
