Description Joseph 2023-04-22 19:41:49 UTC
I run emerged Virtualbox 7.0.6 and its runs Windows 7-server, it is OK but trying to connect from another Virtualbox running Windows box on the network to Windows-7-server running on Virtualbox 7.0.6 is almost unusable.

When I click on a program that request informaton/data from Virtualbox 7.0.6 Windows 7-server I had to wait 30 to 50sec. before the program responds.

I downgraded server to Virtualbox-6.1.42 and it is not fast bat manageable.

Reproducible: Always

Please check and report the RAM usage and if it is swapping.

Box 1.) Running Gentoo, VirtualBox running Windows7-as a server it is hosting OpenDental mysql database

Box 2.) Running Gentoo, VirtualBox running Windows7 or 10 running OpenDental and pull/write information to window-7-server on Box-1

After upgrading to VirtualBox-7.0.6 (both boxes) Box-1 running server was fast and responsive

But Box-2 trying to pull/write information to Box-2 was almost non-responsive, every click of a mouse or any keystroke it took VirtualBox 30sec to 50sec to respond. Unusable.

I downgraded Box-1 VirtualBox to 6.1.42-r1 and it is not fast but manageable.

VirtualBox-7.0.6 is not usable for application running over network.
Comment 3 Joseph 2023-04-22 23:32:15 UTC
No, I did not notice any memory swap

How did you configure the networking? Does anything else run slow in this scenario, like for example are Windows shares visible and slow too?

I setup, similar scenario at home, with VirtualBox 7.0.6

Box 1.) Running Windows 7 - server
Box 2.) Running Windows 7 - client, connecting to MySQL on Box-1

When I start program on Box-2 and connect to server on Box-1 it took me 90sec. to connect. On VirtualBox 6.1.42 it is almost instant.
After connecting, trying to do any operation with mouse click it take about 10sec. for server to respond. Normally it should be instant.

The network setting in VirtualBox are default. Did not change anything.
Try to browse files on Box-1 server, from Box-2 client is fast and responsive.

So it seems to me VirtualBox 7.0.6 is unusable in this scenario.

Let's try to figure out if this is a networking issue, a high load on the server issue or simply something that triggers a bug. Things to try:

- changing the networking options from NAT to Bridged
- checking if the server becomes unresponsive (both the Windows server and the host while the server is bogged down)
- checking if the virtual machine has enough memory - i.e., Windows may exhaust how much memory has been allocated to it and swap in a swapfile on C:
- while waiting for the server to respond, try to launch task manager in Windows 7 on Box 1 and see what it shows.

- Network option are in Bridge mode on both boxes.
- Both VirtualBoxes have about 2600MB left CPU is barely at 2%
- Task Manager on Box-1 (server) is not showing anything, on Box-2 (the client) when I start the program Task Manager is showing program is not responding and after about 90sec. it connects. Same happens when the program starts whenever I click on anything it task manager is showing not responding and after about 10sec. it connects.
It is happening with every click of a mouse on Box-2

I've just seen this ticket https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/21881

Can you check how many cores you have and how many of them are assigned to VirtualBox? Try to assign half minus one, see if the situation improves.
Comment 9 Joseph 2023-12-19 05:26:27 UTC
VirtualBox-7.0.10 has the same problem as 7.0.6

Then networking is very slow almost unresponsive.

Why do they stabilize something that doesn't work!
