All versions of rp-pppoe except 3.5-r9 have been removed. This version stores a null username if used more than once, thus rendering the adsl connection useless. r7 did not do this but is no longer in portage, meanin g that the ebuild and the source that worked will have been removed even before the "upgrade" breaks the system. This bug-report relates to the portage tree and the way versions are removed prematurely, not the rp-pppoe issue itself. #90219 covers that issue. Other examples could be sited. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1.Install and configure a working Gentoo system 2.Keep the system upto date paying attention to correctly update configs. 3.Wait for one of your working packages to be removed from the tree and replaced by a poorly tested "update". 4. Discover you can no longer reinstall the working version because it has been removed from portage. Actual Results: A broken / disfunctional system. Expected Results: That a choise of working and maintained package versions are available and that the system may be maintained in a working state without constant intervention and frequent recourse to gentoo-cvs , masking and overlaying to bring back deleted packages. It seems that some time at the end of last year a decision was made to reduce the file count in portage. While this seems desirable it must not be allowed to increase Gentoo's primary weakness: the ammount of maintainance effort required to keep a Gentoo system working. This has been said many times on the forums but I think merits a bug #.
Is this a dupe of Bug 90219 (fixed) or some more general complaint?
Sorry , I thought I was explicit enough.
This bug-report relates to the portage tree and the way versions are removed prematurely, not the rp-pppoe issue itself. #90219 covers that issue.
Bugzilla isn't the place to bring up larger concerns with process. That kind of thing needs to be hashed out on the mailing list. Use bugzilla to file issues with specific packages. Thanks.
