Description Alexandru Toma 2005-04-23 07:33:50 UTC
man used to show colours in the past. After upgrading a lot of packages (xfree -> xorg being the most important upgrade), man doesn't show colours anymore. Re-emerging man doesn't do a thing.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. man ebuild
2.
3.

Actual Results:
The manpage is shown in black and white.

Expected Results:
The manpage is shown in colour.

Portage 2.0.51.19 (default-linux/x86/2005.0, gcc-3.3.5-20050130,

Hmm, sure you didn't mess up your config? man never showed colours by default.
Comment 3 Alexandru Toma 2005-04-23 09:08:02 UTC
Well, I'm pretty sure it showed colours here... what config files exactly are you talking about? As I said I updated a lot of packages and by the time I realized this it was already too late to try and find out which package did this... I suspect xorg-x11 though.
Comment 4 Alexandru Toma 2005-04-23 09:12:44 UTC
Also, the xterm colours are slightly changed (if my eyes don't deceive me). They are easier on the eyes. This may be related.
Comment 5 Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-04-25 03:16:14 UTC
Never had colors by default here either.
Comment 6 Alexandru Toma 2005-04-25 03:38:16 UTC
Man... I really must be dreaming things then since I _definately_ remember seeing colours. :) If there is no default colour output for man, is it possible to make it display colours then? Some config option? If there is then maybe it got reset in my case.
Comment 7 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2005-04-25 13:34:53 UTC
ive never seen color in manpages either ... looking at /etc/man.conf, the only thing it mentions is removing '-c' from the *ROFF variables

after doing that, `man grotty` shows green/red colors

going to chalk this up to misconfiguration
Comment 8 Alexandru Toma 2005-04-25 23:54:12 UTC
Well, just to show you guys that I'm not the only one who had coloured man page output: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-46598-highlight-coloured+pages.html

I definately think it was related to the xorg-x11 upgrade. Previously I used xfree and kept using it for a long time, even after it was removed from portage. Anyway, it doesn't really matter, since this doesn't seem to be a bug but more like a different configuration.
Comment 9 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2005-04-26 05:53:07 UTC
can you confirm that playing around with the *ROFF vars in man.conf helps at all ?
Comment 10 Alexandru Toma 2005-04-26 23:43:50 UTC
Removing -c from NROFF doesn't do a thing. Also, I found _some_ colour in the man pages... of course it's not like before... just a little blue.

To see these just "man groff" and "man grops"
Comment 12 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2005-04-27 05:54:25 UTC
right ... that's the most color i've ever seen in a manpage :)
Comment 13 Grant Goodyear (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-04-28 09:15:47 UTC
If you want a colored man page, then:

# emerge most

$ export PAGER=most
$ man bash

Gentoo used to have most set as the default pager, but that was in 1.0_rcX days.
Comment 14 Alexandru Toma 2005-04-28 09:46:06 UTC
Thank you for the info but that's not what I had before. I didn't have most set as the pager. It was less. You can clearly differentiate the two and I would've remembered... also, the colours were different.
Comment 15 Alexandru Toma 2005-04-28 09:47:03 UTC
My first Gentoo installation was version 1.4
Comment 16 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2005-04-28 15:57:46 UTC
and i've been using the same install since around Gentoo 1.2 and ive never seen colors :)

so i wonder where the config setting lays ...
Comment 17 Alexandru Toma 2005-04-28 23:57:52 UTC
I ask myself that same question, especially since the coloured output was quite pretty and easier to read IMO. If anyone has any ideas then please post them.
