I'd like to propose a change to the dir structure we use for downloads. On the mirrors the iso's are stored in each release versions directory, I propose we make a master iso directory above that. I propose to have a http://MIRROR/pub/Linux/distriutions/gentoo/iso/* dir so people don't have to dig around wondering where the isos are. Right now if you want a sparc iso, you need to goto the 1.1a dir, then go back to the 1.4 dir to get the current stage3. It would be helpful I think if all the isos were in one spot that way, its easy to find and you'd know if there was a newer iso, without having to dig through each release dir.
i understand the ones wanting to keep things together sorted by release or architecture and i understand the ones who want all stages in one dir, all isos in an other one... so what about making both sides happy by using links? are mirrors able to handle hardinks perfectly? that would be best... with symlinks i've the fear that many tools only will download the link then and not its target...
I don't think that links are a good idea, they have to be explicity setup in the mirror's rsync cron jobs (the remote mirrors), and if not then they will be mutliple copies of everything under sylinks :( I like the idea of having an easy to get at ISO directory as well, saves digging, get the complaint a lot that people had to look everywhere and still didn't find what they want (of course that's not always our fault either ) ;)
closing, dirs have changed several times now
