Description Pierre-Olivier Bouchard 2002-10-10 20:53:34 UTC
Using the latest livecd-basic cd (the md5sum from my downloaded version matched
the one from the md5sum on the server), I can't succeed in fdisking and
formatting a hard disk running on a highpoint hpt372 controller (in
single-mode). It fails because I get errors about not being able to write to the
specified disk.

Rebooting resets it enough to let me do "some" of the needed stuff.

I can perform some tests if needed, all I need is description of the steps to
execute.

Bug 8273 8220 1275 321 ...
Comment 2 Brandon Low (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-10-11 09:29:50 UTC
please read bugs first, this controller is not supported by the linux-kernel
version-2.4.19 which is the basis for gentoo-sources-2.4.19-r9 which is in the
livecd.

gentoo-sources-2.4.20 series will have support for this controller.

Comment 4 Pierre-Olivier Bouchard 2002-10-11 20:22:27 UTC
The thing is, dmesg shows that it's loading the hpt370/372 driver sucessfully...
I don't remember what it exactly said, but it seemed to load as it did when I
was running my own-compiled gentoo-sources 2.4.19-r9 kernel

This is a regression. I am fully positive it worked fine in 2.4.19-r9 on my
system. I can't recover my kernel config (I had repartitioned before
experiencing this), but it was really simple (3c9x5, via kt266a agp, i2c,
preempt.) The other people might be having module conflicts of some sort, or I
might have been lucky before, I can't know.

I am not getting the same errors as in bug 8273, I already experienced that kind
of problem on another controller, the hard drive was faulty (though that
person's drive may be fine)

Do you have an estimate of when we might see a new live cd, and a new kernel ebuild?
Comment 5 Brandon Low (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-10-11 23:38:21 UTC
Hmm, the liveCD is based on virtually the same patchset (- some performance
enhancing stuff) that -r9 is, if your controller worked on -r7 however that
kernel was based on alan cox's kernel which has a COMPLETELY different driver
ATM. The next gentoo-sources (2.4.20-r0/1 haven't decided on -r yet) will most
likely be based on -ac again and will therefore have the rewritten and better
driver.

What's the state of things for a new livecd? Will we get a new one soon?

Uhh, actually while writing this I saw new dates on the files on ibiblio (even
though the date on the stage1 tbz's filename didn't change), was it a new
version? The dates make it look like it's a restore from backup...

please test on the _rc2 or later liveCDs and with the latest lolo-sources and
let me know what the status is.

Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux".

I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers,
this is the only reasonable way to do this.
