Description Martin Erdtmann 2023-03-05 12:04:29 UTC
Recently I figured out that phone calls in telegam-desktop do not work. This happened on a pure ALSA system and on a pulseaudio system as well. Both machines are running on Gentoo AMD64 stable. Surprisingly audio/video groups with multiple users were working!

Pls see this thread:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1162140-highlight-.html

The same problem exists for version telegram-desktop-4.5.3 and for telegram-desktop-bin-4.4.1

Finally I figured out that a snap Version of Telegram-desktop, version 4.6.5 on ZorinOS in Virtualbox works.

Therefore I compiled telegram-desktop-4.6.3, the lastest available in gentoo, and I seems to work either.

My assumption is, that all versions lower that 4.6.* are no longer supported for phone calls by telegram. The latest stable is 4.4.1.

Best regards

You are heavily mixing topics here. Please try to confirm with the latest ebuild net-im/telegram-desktop-bin-4.6.5.

If you can not repro on that version, please close. What other ebuilds or distros do ... is maybe kind of interesting, but when you do not even compare the same versions it is really hard to draw any conclusion from it.

How to repro? Like is there a test call function, or do i need to bother someone to help me test?
Comment 2 Martin Erdtmann 2023-03-10 17:42:42 UTC
It does not work for the lastest stable ebuild, which is 4.4.1.
It works for the lastest testing ebuild, which is 4.6.3.

(4.6.5. does not exist in gentoo)

My concern is, that it does not make sense to have a non-working version marked as stable.
Comment 3 Henning Schild 2023-03-13 06:44:52 UTC
4.6.5 is available in gentoo, and the ebuild net-im/telegram-desktop-bin is not "stable" in any version

Since this bug is about net-im/telegram-desktop-bin (according to the subject), we should focus on just that.

So please try that latest one and make sure to report on how to repro, because we might have to discuss that with upstream.

If you do not get back i will close this after some time, since 4.4 (again subject) will be removed soon anyhow.

Please consider opening another one for net-im/telegram-desktop if that is affected in 4.4.1, because this ebuild indeed has "stable". And here the maintainer will also want to know how to repro.

This bug was supposed to be about telegram-desktop but not the "-bin" version. This was my fault. I am sorry for that. I changed to title to telegram-desktop (without "bin"). I accidently wrote the wrong label.

Thanks for reporting the bug.

Sorry to repeat what maybe has been said already, but it's unclear to me, does this problem occur with the -bin version? The initial message seems to imply this, but the bug was assigned to only me now, which is what confuses me.

If it works with the -bin version, but not the source version, try 4.6.5. It's been stuck in review purgatory[1] for weeks, though the changelogs don't note anything relevant for this issue.

If doesn't work with either version, it's fine to mark the bug report against both versions, for clarity. But please understand that it might be either an issue with your local configuration or an upstream issue, and I'd suggest making sure you're not using any weird compiler flags, that media-libs/openal is configured with the correct audio system flags (e.g. you're running a desktop profile), and that your alsa/pulseaudio configs are pristine and unmodified. It might also be advisable to report the problem upstream.

To collect more info, paste the output of "emerge --info net-im/telegram-desktop", run the program in the terminal, enter a call and paste the output, and upload ~/.local/share/TelegramDesktop/log.txt.

Comment 6 Martin Erdtmann 2023-03-13 13:18:16 UTC
Maybe my initial report was a bit confusing, let me clarify this:

What I have tested, was as follows:

NOT working:

- telegram-desktop-4.4.1
- telegram-desktop-4.5.3
- telegram.desktop-bin-4.4.1

Working:

- telegram-desktop-4.6.3
- (foreign distribution ZorinOS) binary Version 4.6.5

NOT tested be me:

- telegram-desktop-bin = all version greater than 4.4.1

I strongly do not believe that there is a local issue on my system since the minor bin version failed for me as well. But I you want me to test versions of telegram-desktop-bin > 4.4.1 I will do that.

best regards
Martin

In that case this is as good a reason as any to stabilize a newer version of the source ebuild.
I'll wait for 4.6.5 to be merged and then propose this.
