With sane-backends-1.1.1-r13 the network scanning functionality of my HP PageWide Pro 577 works perfectly.  After upgrading to sane-backends-1.2.1 xsane informs me when I try to scan a document that there is nothing in the document feeder (which is true, although I have the flatbed option selected so this should not matter).

Downgrading sane-backends resolves the issue.
