Description Michael Mair-Keimberger (iamnr3) 2023-01-31 20:23:18 UTC
Hi,

I've updated today my ldap server to openldap-2.6.3-r3. For that I do had to update my database from hdb to mdb since support was removed. That worked quite flawless with slapcat / slapadd.
However what i've noticed is that since 2.6.3, i don't have any logs anymore. Usually the loglevel is set to "stats" which usually generates quite some logs (and as far as i know is the default).
I've tried to change loglevels and logfile but still won't get any logs at all. I've also tried to start slapd with "-d any" or "-d stats" but slapd always complains that it has to be build with "debug" enabled.

Even though everything seem to work normal (ldapsearch works, user-login works, i couldn't find any problems) it makes me a bit uneasy not having logs at all.

Please note that i also still use the slapd.conf file instead of slapd.d config files.

Were you using syslog for logging? if so, you must include "debug" in USE flags

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-8769313.html?sid=c1f4a1b376e80688d97bbe1c79599551

I was able to get logging to file with
logfile /path/to/file.log
However this did not enable me to do the filtering I had previously setup under syslog-ng

I was only able to get syslog working with USE="debug"

We should probably flip that to be on by default or unconditionally do it in that case..

From my understanding (I've not tested much beyond getting syslog working again) you also won't get logfile nor stderr debug messages without --enable-debug

For the build here (--enable-debug) the "logfile /path/to/file.log" is not written UNLESS -d is passed to slapd on startup.

However with the openrc script as is, this also results in flooding the launching console with log messages as openldap also defaults to sending these log//debug messages to logfile AND stderr - need to either redirect stderr or include "logfile-only on" in the slapd.conf // "olcLogFileOnly: TRUE" in slapd.d

Noting for clarity: built with --enable-debug
"loglevel something" (or -s something in startup slapd arguments) only outputs to syslog.
-d something, (with "loglevel something") outputs to logfile, stderr and syslog.
