I find myself completely stumped at this one without knowing a good way to fix it. Emerges just stop (completely), cpu goes to 0% and nothing happens. This happens at different times during different ebuilds. 

* During gaim it stops in the middle of a compile
* During strace, k3b, (most others) it stops at 'checking build system type...'

I just got done emerging gcc on this computer, so it sounds botched gcc, but I can't re-emerge gcc so what would be my option(s)?

Please, post emerge info output and some actual logs of failed emerge. If you have strace, that would be probably handy as well.

Very sorry, I didn't think this ended up getting submitted :( The problem was distcc, I removed it and all problems went away, sorry for the problem.
