emerge --unmerge (or --depclean) prints which package versions it will remove and which ones it won't remove. The list is supposed to be grouped by package. This works if you just specify a package name to remove all versions. If you specify specific versions to remove, each one results in a separate grouping being printed (see "actual results"). --depclean also does this, although it is less obvious how to trigger it (perhaps it happens every time depclean removes multiple versions of a package).
