Output of build.log and build environment

Hello,

dev-libs/gobject-introspection-1.74.0 does not build on hardened musl profile, when emerging xfce-desktop.

It should compile on musl, as it does on other musl-based distros. Unfortunately I cannot yet provide URL's, but see respective packages in Adelie, Void and Alpine Linux repositories.

Reading the repective ebuild it seems as it would need to be adapted to work with musl. The build output indicates this as well, as the failed attempt to use glib-2.0 shows.

Relevant logs are attached, further information can be provided.

Thanks in advance.

I think there's something more to this but I'm not sure yet. I've built this fine on musl many a time.

Also, this is small, and you don't need to do it this time - but would you mind uploading build.log and environment as separate files? We're used to sifting through them in that format so it's easier to find bits.

Of course, this would have been my preferred way of uploading the logs as well. Unfortunately I didn't find the option to attach more than one file in the bug report tool.

I will add them right away.

Thanks!

Tried again in a llvm+musl stage3 & musl stage3 (so gcc) and both worked, so something more is going on here.

There's something notable in Alpine's patches to adapt to 64-bit time_t: https://git.alpinelinux.org/aports/tree/main/gobject-introspection/musl-time64.patch. I think this is something we probably need to pull in, but I don't think it should be causing your issue either.

In the absence of further ideas (I'm not giving up yet, but I need to get on with some other bits for now), I wonder two things:
1. does 'env' show anything interesting? Could you share its output? (I know it's likely in the environment file, but it's hard to then see "stuff you set" vs "stuff the ebuild set").

2. If you grab a musl stage3, then immediately emerge -v1 gobject-introspection, does it work? If not, can we try figure out the steps needed to try make it happen?
Comment 6 Sam James archtester Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev Security 2023-01-13 12:27:03 UTC
I also wonder if rebuilding glib helps at all, but also if you get any interesting messages when you try to lddtree it (or during its build).

Could this be related to hardened musl toolchain?
This Gentoo installation is still pretty new, as I just started installing it. Not sure if relevant, but I tried emerging it while in a chroot on a debian system.

"emerge -v1 gobject-introspection" did not yield any different result. I could retry in an even "fresher" install, but doubt any difference, as this install has not really been touched much yet.

It shouldn't be. It's what I default to.

Can you humour me and try it? (as it worked straight away for me, and identifying what makes your system interesting is going to be a big part of this)

(Just extract it to /tmp and chroot in.)

glib rebuilt without any problems, rebuilding gobject-introspection failed exactly as before.

Curious to see now, if there will be any changes with a fresh stage3, I'll report back as soon as it's done.

Same error as before, new logs are attached.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Stage 3 from hxxps://linux.rz.ruhr-uni-bochum. de/download/gentoo-mirror/releases/amd64/autobuilds/current-stage3-amd64-musl-hardened/stage3-amd64-musl-hardened-20230108T161708Z.tar.xz (not sure if this was the same as used before)
2. extract to /tmp, chroot in according to Handbook:AMD64
3. emerge --sync
4. no update of portage (although requested as of today)
5. emerge -v1 gobject-introspection

Output of emerge --info:

The same steps work for me with no failure (just tried them) so we'll have to try see when the error gets triggered and poke more.

How bizarre. Anything interesting about the host machine?

I am surprised as well. The host machine is a Lenovo T14 Gen 1 Laptop, with latest firmware updates installed and no peculiar BIOS/UEFI settings.
I'm running Debian testing/sid (tracking bookworm release, with security updates from sid, see hxxps://wiki.debian. org/DebianTesting#Best_practices_for_Testing_users). Root and User use ZSH, with grml zshrc (hxxps://git.grml. org/f/grml-etc-core/etc/zsh/zshrc).

It runs mostly without any problems, but the usr-merge was problematic in my case. Not sure if this is default behaviour since the usr-merge, but executables in /sbin have to be called directly, i.e. chroot requires "sudo (doas in my particular case) /sbin/chroot [dir]". Just calling chroot returns that no such executable has been found.

Hope this helps, please let me know, if you need more detailed information.

I had tried the same process with the musl+llvm stage3 without luck. Having rebooted into the gentoo installation itself, I could now successfully compile gobject-introspection.

I'm still clueless as to what has caused this problem, I suppose it has either to do with Debian, the chroot or a peculiar setting on my side, that I'm not (yet) aware of.

Anyway sorry for the trouble and thank you very much for your time and help!

P.S.: I'm not yet marking this as resolved, in case there's further interest to investigate this. Please do let me know if I can be of help.

(Sorry, I'd missed this until now.)

I wonder if it's something like under sandbox, with whatever kernel settings Debian has (including runtime toggles like sysctls), it failed.
