x11-libs/gtk+:2 is dead and needs to go away. It is also the last package to block cleanup of libunique:1.

Are there upstream plans to port to GTK3?

libunique is an optional dependency of Gnome Commander. If needed we can remove that one from the ebuild. I might also remove the dependency in the the sources, but I don't know when I can find the time for it.

At the moment there is only little work done to migrate to GTK3. This will certainly take some time...

Migration to Gtk3 is done. PR for version bump in Gentoo is awaiting merge: https://github.com/gentoo/gentoo/pull/37894
