Description Nick Hodulik 2005-04-11 09:34:39 UTC
The entry in /etc/services for IMAP is labeled imap2 -> 143. I did check IANA's website and they still have imap2 as the officially-sanctioned textual representation of the protocol, but a) IMAP has been officially at version 4rev1 for two years now, and much longer for just plaid old version 4, and b) no program or user anywhere, unless specifically tailored to this strangeness, uses "imap2" as the representation for IMAP, and c) other distros have gone the common-sense route and changed it to "imap" by default. Some ebuilds, such as cyris-imapd, seem to have been "updated" (finally) to use "imap2" as their service, but most applications seem to use imap.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
Install Gentoo. Look in /etc/services. Be annoyed.
Actual Results:
I was annoyed.

Expected Results:
Not annoyed me. Seriously, I think it should have represented the modern
incarnation of the protocol and what most users expect.

whats the problem ? 'imap' and 'imap2' resolve to the same thing:
imap 143/tcp imap2 # Internet Message Access Protocol
imap 143/udp imap2
imap3 220/tcp # Interactive Mail Access
imap3 220/udp
imaps 993/tcp # imap4 protocol over TLS/SSL
imaps 993/udp
