The current version of Knights is: 0.6.4-beta - it seems to fix a number of important UI issues that were preventing the program from properly interfacing with a chess engine. I'd like to see the ebuild get updated. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emerge knights 2. 3.
Exactly what UI issues does it fix?
It adds a key feature that allows the user to set the level of difficulty against a computer opponent - without this, the computer just thinks practially for ever on each move. It also seems to fix the issue where if "ponder" is set gnuchess is not killed on exit of the program.

Updated old ebuild to work with the new version: - They changed "knights-0.6" into "knight" in the src.tar.gz. Don't know why they do this but the ebuild now handles the change. - Original patch not needed any more (the change is alredy in). But there's a new gcc 3.4 bug that needs to be patched.
Any news? I've just found this report which describes the exact problem I'm having with knights-0.6. (The computer thinks forever on each move.)
I suggest you to try kboard instead - knights is unmaintained upstream. Bug 156274 or layman -a genstef
> I suggest you to try kboard instead Thanks, I didn't know about kboard. Unfortunately its webpage states that "Support for chess engines is scheduled, but not yet ready." But playing against gnuchess is precisely what I'd like to do :-/
Then, Will knight be masked for removal or bumped to 0.6.4beta? Thanks for information :-)
let me know when 0.6.4 final is out.
