Instead of removing the eclass and breaking countless overlay ebuilds that depended on this could we have a graceful transition to acct-user.eclass? Maybe mark it as deprecated and print a warning when it's used in an ebuild for a while?

It's been marked deprecated for years which repoman and pkgcheck warned on, then was given last rites on the mailing list a month ago.

I agree we should've had a warning on usage fwiw, I just don't think it's worth reverting the removal over now. But for future deprecations, we should.
