Oh and I want to add, this problem does not exist for ogg files, just for mp3 as far as I can see.
What mp3 plugin are you using? xmms-mpg123 or xmms-mad?
I never specified one but these are the xmms related packages installed on my system so I guess it's mad... $ find /var/db/pkg/ -type d -iname '*xmms*' /var/db/pkg/media-plugins/xmms-alsa-1.2.10 /var/db/pkg/media-plugins/xmms-arts-0.7.1-r1 /var/db/pkg/media-plugins/xmms-crossfade-0.3.8 /var/db/pkg/media-plugins/xmms-esd-1.2.10-r1 /var/db/pkg/media-plugins/xmms-mad-0.8 /var/db/pkg/media-plugins/xmms-mikmod-1.2.10 /var/db/pkg/media-plugins/xmms-oss-1.2.10 /var/db/pkg/media-plugins/xmms-vorbis-1.2.10-r1 /var/db/pkg/media-sound/xmms-1.2.10-r14 /var/db/pkg/x11-themes/xmms-themes-0.0.3
ok... I suggest using xmms-mpg123 for playing your mp3s. If you still want to use mad, I suggest trying to get this fixed with the upstream developers.
Indeed, xmms-mpg123 does not have this problem. I just sent an email to the author of xmms-mad so at least the author knows about the bug...
