I have an nforce3-based Epox 8kda3j mobo, with support for 7.1 sound channels, and a 5.1 speaker system connected to the board. This system works great under windows XP. True 5.1 surround. I am using an amd64 gentoo system with a 2.6.11 kernel. I installed alsa using the ebuild with the intel8x0 module (tried the kernel module and it didn't work as well) . Nvidia has released an OSS support, using a close code driver supplied by nvidia. This driver has many problems, and i decided to go with the alsa module corresponding to my board. I have sound from the two front speakers. No sound from the rear speakers or from the subwoofer. I tried mixing it different in all the possible ways using alsamixer. I can make it duplicate the stereo sound played by the front speakers, on the rear speakers, but (a) not on the center, (b) not on the subwoofer and (c) it is not real surround. The microphone isn't working too. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. install alsa intel8x0 alsa module from the amd64 portage. 2. config the mixer using alsamixer 3. get no surround sound, as specified earlier Actual Results: i could get no surround sound. duplicated front at best, but still with no sound from the center speaker or the subwoofer. the microphone too refuses to work. Expected Results: surround sound should have flowed from all 6 speakers. and the microphone should have worked too. Until i can get this to work, i have to keep on using the micros~1 XP windows. Please try to solve this as the gentoo system is not usable for my needs until this issue is solved. Is emerge info needed for this case as well? (sorry, it's my first bug report)
- missing surround sound is definitely not a major issue - you missed to write which alsa-* ebuild version you're using - if not a configuration issue, it's most likely a problem, which needs to be solved upstream

Hello, I opened this bug report a couple of weeks ago, and there seems to be no activity regarding it. Is there any way that i can further assist, to have this issue resolved? The sound support of this system is very important for me, for i cannot use it (with Gentoo linux) otherwise.
Try 1.0.9_rc2. If that still produces problems, you should contact upstream and let me know the bug number so I can follow up as I lack the hardware to reproduce/fix this. http://bugtrack.alsa-project.org
