Have you edited /etc/joe/joerc? If so please attach it to the bug, also please provide the output of strace joe.

Your joerc is fine, please provide the output of 'strace joe'. You'll need to emerge strace first if you haven't already got it installed.

I've found a significant clue.

Scott portage # gcc-config -l

#5 builds busted programs..some of them.  in this case joe happens to be one of them.  #8 will build programs that work.  #5 also builds programs that cannot be handled in gdb.  #8 is again fine.

i'm going to do a quick search on gcc and if nothign relevant shows up, i'll open a new bug, point this to that, and resolve/invalid this bug.

marking invalid, see bug 91283.  this is a gcc issue.
