Whenever I try to run gaim it will randomly segfault. I'm really not sure if there is a specific action I'm taking that causes this. I don't think there is. I recompiled it with debug enabled and have attached a core dump. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Run gaim 2. wait for it to crash Actual Results: it segfaults Expected Results: keep running Portage 2.0.51.19 (default-linux/amd64/2005.0, gcc-3.4.3, glibc-2.3.4.20050125-r1, 2.6.11-gentoo-r3 x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.11-gentoo-r3 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+ Gentoo Base System version 1.4.16 Python: dev-lang/python-2.3.4-r1 [2.3.4 (#1, Mar 4 2005, 07:02:38)] distcc 2.18.3 x86_64-pc-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) (default port 3632) [disabled] dev-lang/python: 2.3.4-r1 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.59-r6, 2.13 sys-devel/automake: 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.5, 1.4_p6, 1.6.3, 1.9.4 sys-devel/binutils: 2.15.92.0.2-r7 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.10-r4 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.8.1-r4 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=athlon64 -pipe" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/env /usr/kde/3.3/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=athlon64 -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs autoconfig ccache distlocks sandbox" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://distfiles.gentoo.org http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="amd64 X acpi alsa apm arts berkdb bitmap-fonts cdparanoia cdr crypt cups curl dvd dvdr fam flac font-server foomaticdb fortran gif gpm imagemagick ipv6 java jp2 jpeg junit kde lm_sensors lzw lzw-tiff motif mp3 ncurses nls nptl oggvorbis opengl oss pam perl png python qt readline samba spell sqlite ssl tcpd tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts usb userlocales xinerama xml2 xpm xrandr xv zlib" Unset: ASFLAGS, CBUILD, CTARGET, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS

Just to rule out a common problem, do you use ARTS for sound?
Yes, I do use ARTS for sound. Does that make a habit of crashing random programs?
libao, which is what gaim uses for sound by default, crashes with arts. Either disable sound, or specify a Command to play sound (then it won't go through libao). Let me know how it works then. http://trac.xiph.org/cgi-bin/trac.cgi/ticket/644
I'm pretty sure that's not the problem then. Because, as far as I know, I have all sounds turned off (I can't stand that constant bing-bong with IMs). Also, sending and receiving work just fine until gaim decides to die on me. It really is rather random. I've grown to believe it is a hardware problem, though. The number of programs segfaulting has increased and lm-sensors is reporting that the voltage being supplied to my computer is well out of range (specifically the +3.3,+5, and -12 being the worst culprits). It's not my power supply and it's not my building's electricity. So, I'm gonna try contacting my motherboard manufacturer. Until I get all that sorted out, It's probably not worth spending any more of your time on this problem. I'll add another comment if I get things in working order. I don't know if you want to change the bug status to reflect that. Anyway, thanks for looking into it for me.

OK. I still think something is wrong with my hardware, but it would appear that is not what was causing gaim to crash. I changed the skin that GTK apps use and it is running smoothly. Before I was using baghira (masked) through gtk-qt-engine (masked). Now I'm just using the basic GTK theme and experiencing no problems. I'm also seeing no problems with Azureus-bin which I think was crashing due to the same issue.
but i'm using all the defaults and nothing more (i think)! I any one want more informations about my harware or config files...it's just say something
I'm closing this bug as CANTFIX since Howard believes it is hardware. tiago, your bug is obviously different, please re-file a new bug with debugging output and a backtrace.
